Then again, we’re sure the early feminist would have also been a Barbie stan.

With custom Margiela and a close-to-God updo, Miley Cyrus is channeling both her own godmother, Dolly Parton, and the godmother of red carpet iconography, Cher. This barely-there gold metal look is made up of hundreds of safety pins and was created for her by John Galliano, who referenced a similar look from his FW 1996 collection. Between this look and the designer’s viral Margiela couture show, 2024 is shaping up to be a comeback of sorts for the designer, who shaped much of the ’90s and early ’00s with theatrical shows that found their way onto the red carpet.

Only Taylor Swift could start trending hours before the Grammys just because she changed her profile picture to a black-and-white photo. Fans suspected she was about to announce the highly anticipated Reputation (Taylor’s Version) drop, so when Swift’s website suspiciously went down shortly before the ceremony, she sent Twitter into a spiral. Swifties assumed the singer would be wearing all black—an homage to the Reputation era—but instead, she wore a sculptural white Schiaparelli couture gown with long trains and a high leg slit, black opera gloves, and a watch choker. Of course, fans are dissecting every last detail as we write this—or would be, if they weren’t freaking out about her big announcement.

Back in the 2000s, musicians didn’t necessarily have stylists, and they’d wear Canadian tuxedos, skirts over pants, apple-bottom jeans and boots with the fur with reckless abandon. It was FUN. Leave it to Ice Spice to bring that same kind of energy into 2024 with a Baby Phat denim look trimmed with fuzzy details. She may have been barely a month old when the 2000 Grammys took place, but her looks feels like it could have pulled right from that red carpet.

On the other hand, Spice’s fellow Best New Artist nominee Gracie Abrams went more subtle, in an all-black midriff-baring two-piece set by Chanel. When asked by red carpet host Laverne Cox about it, Abrams said she just wanted to “feel like I was in my own skin—and also match my mom.” Although Abrams and Ice Spice wore two completely different looks, what they shared was a commitment to personal style. Abrams really did look like one of her songs come to life.

Olivia Rodrigo channeled Old Hollywood glamor in a white gown speckled in shimmering embellishments. The look was archival Versace from the Spring 1995 collection, originally worn by supermodel Linda Evangelista. Rodrigo consistently has the best vintage pulls, the kind that her Gen Z fans lust after online and would probably write angsty, envious ballads about wishing they owned.

You can always expect Laverne Cox not only to style herself, but also to show up in a piece from her own personal archival. Cox is just that fashion girl. For tonight, she wore a Spring/Summer 2015 Comme des Garçons look. She loves it because of what Rei Kawakubo said the collection was meant to represent, which was all about finding the beauty in things that are disturbing.

The only thing better than winning your first Grammy at 22 years old is winning your first Grammy at 22 years old in custom Versace. Tyla’s asymmetrical pastel-green gown resembled similar pieces from the house’s 2004 collection. But perhaps the most Y2K detail was the way the fabric wrapped around her to expose her hips, upper thighs, and bellybutton ring—the last of which is perhaps the most unexpected early aughts trend to come back.

Caroline Polachek isn’t known just for her music, but also for the visual world she’s been able to create. Her archival FW 1998 Olivier Theyskens look isn’t just major because it’s major, but also because it also feels completely in tune with her otherworldly universe.
