5 Unforgettable Fashion Trends of 2024 We Can't Let Go Of

The end of the offers us a moment to pause and reflect on the major milestones and achievements. We might think smugly about the amount of hot girl walking we did or perhaps contemplate adopting a dumb phone for 2025 to (finally) cut down on our screen time. The end of the year is also a critical time to reflect on the fashion moments we loved this year while setting our sartorial intentions for the next.

This year, we craved comfort from fashion, but not the tracksuit and sneaker kind. From the return of boho spearheaded by Chemena Kamali at Chloé to our infatuations with mellow shades of brown and butter yellow we craved calming, luxurious tones and textures. But, we still had fun. Lef-of-field fashion moments came in the form of ugly shoes (some might say “quirky”, an itch for Jemima Kirk-style slogan tees and a passion for capris (wear them all together, we dare you).

Our Favourite Trends From 2024:

50 Shades Of… Brown:

Whether it was mousse, tan, beige, or buff, earthy tones took center stage in 2024. While neon green may have captured the spotlight culturally, it didn’t find a place in our closets. Instead, the boho revival steered us toward soft, warm hues like creamy browns and toasted tans. From ’70s-inspired tan suede jackets paired with silver jewelry and relaxed denim to delicate pink-tinted browns dubbed “mocha mousse,” these shades are set to remain wardrobe staples in 2025.

In 2024, practicality met style with oversized carryalls that could hold a book, a laptop, and even a change of clothes—ideally in shades of brown. Structured designs like the Coach Empire Cryl 35, The Row Margaux, and the revived Balenciaga Le City Bag stole the spotlight, proving that bigger was better (a nod to Cousin Gregg’s infamous date in Succession). Having found our ideal roomy companion, we’re not letting go of them anytime soon as we move into the new year.

Weird Shoes:

In 2024, shoes transcended their functional purpose of getting us from point A to point B and became bold, subversive punctuation marks to complete any outfit. From sultry thong heels paired with capris to quirky “dad shoes” like boat shoes and chunky sneakers styled with skirts and jorts, or playful jelly sandals, footwear embraced a sense of humor that we fully enjoyed. It’s safe to say our thong heels won’t be retiring anytime soon.

Thought boho chic was gone for good? Think again. In 2024, the trend made a strong comeback under the creative direction of Chemena Kamali at Chloé. Kamali’s Fall 2024 collection drew inspiration from the Phoebe Philo era of Chloé, channeling iconic looks worn by NYU-era Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, a lovestruck 2000s Sienna Miller with Jude Law, and Nicole Richie shielding herself from paparazzi flashes with oversized sunglasses and a Chloé Paddington bag. Far from being a mere nostalgic imitation, Kamali reimagined boho for 2024 with ethereal translucent fabrics, soft pastels, and luxurious tan leathers, exuding effortless sex appeal, comfort, and ease.

Oval Sunglasses:

Our infatuation with boho didn’t extend to sun-safe eyewear in 2024. This is largely thanks to Hailey Bieber and her ultra-slim Saint Laurent shades. Their power over us continues to hold, and we suspect our eyewear will stay streamlined in 2025.

Loud Luxury:

Instagram account @databutmakeitfashion highlighted the rise of “unapologetically loud” luxury in 2025 with a December 8th post. The year began with the mob wife trend and John Galliano’s extravagantly maximalist runway for Maison Margiela. While the mob wife aesthetic was soon replaced by the Brat trend, both movements served as a bold contrast to the clean girl’s understated luxury wardrobe. Experts predict that the maximalism of the mob wife has more staying power than Charli XCX’s pop-grunge style.

Commenters observed that brands like Versace and Galliano were dominating online platforms and selling quickly on sites like Depop and Vestiaire. Galliano’s over-the-top Maison Margiela collection from January also became the year’s most viral runway.

Maximalism was equally celebrated closer to home, such as the Nicol & Ford show at Australian Fashion Week Sydney. Designers Lil and Katie-Louise showcased a collection inspired by witchcraft and BDSM, featuring bold silhouettes, opulent colors, and striking textures—a stark departure from the clean girl’s minimalistic cotton and cashmere staples.

For more evidence, look no further than Lily-Rose Depp’s dramatic gothic ruffles on the Nosferatu red carpet or Sabrina Carpenter’s head-turning dinner ensemble: a vintage 1994 Chanel faux fur set with a voluminous black skirt and bolero. These statement looks confirm that maximalism is here to stay in 2025.
