Billie Eilish Has Always Had a Singular Fashion Sense - dmusemagz.com
November 5, 2024
In 2017, a bold young singer named Billie Eilish burst onto the music scene with her haunting voice, sharp lyrics, and a unique personal style. Eilish’s fashion is influenced by streetwear, characterized by her love for neon colors, oversized fits, monograms, and graffiti, which contrasts sharply with her emotional ballads and soft singing.
This contrast is a key part of what makes Billie Eilish who she is. Over the years, as she transitioned from a sweet teenager to a confident adult, her style has evolved significantly. While she maintained a youthful vibe by incorporating cartoon characters like Jessica Rabbit, the Powerpuff Girls, and Sailor Moon into her wardrobe, she has also embraced a more mature look on her own terms. For instance, she has worn a Comme des Garçons tee with an extra-long blue tie and paired it with a black t-shirt and basketball shorts.
Eilish has openly discussed her body image and how it influences her fashion choices. “I only started wearing baggy clothes because of my body,” she shared with Vanity Fair in 2021. Although she often sticks to her signature oversized style, she occasionally embraces femininity, such as wearing a frilly Simone Rocha dress to host SNL, channeling Marilyn Monroe at the Met Gala, or donning a chic tweed skirt at the Oscars.
However, Eilish has faced criticism for exploring her feminine side through fashion. In a 2023 Instagram story, she expressed her frustration, saying, “I spent the first 5 years of my career getting absolutely OBLITERATED by you fools for being boyish and dressing how I did & constantly being told I’d be hotter if I acted like a woman. And now when I feel comfortable enough to wear anything remotely feminine or fitting, I’m labeled as a sellout.”
Despite the negativity, Eilish is more authentic than ever. She has promoted her latest album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, in long, baggy shorts and wire-rimmed glasses, and has performed in sports jerseys and knee pads. Whether she’s in streetwear from Left Hand LA and ERL or a Gucci monogram suit or a Willy Chavarria skirt, she remains true to herself.
In celebration of Billie Eilish’s November 2024 cover of Vogue, let’s look back at her style evolution from 2017 to the present.
